Our People
Bernie Hughes - Xero Certified ADVISOR

My experience within the NHS began 9 years ago, when employed as a Finance Officer for a local GP Practice and related Pharmacy Business. Initially using IRIS and SAGE and then Xero, I managed all aspects of the accounting systems including credit control, bank reconciliations, VAT returns, monthly analysis and reporting, year end reconciliations and petty cash systems. I also managed all matters relating to the payroll and pension schemes for both companies, using IRIS Payroll for the Practice and Sage payroll for the Pharmacy.
I have strong analytical and problem solving skills along with extensive experience in the development and implementation of new systems, finance and payroll.
I began my working life as a trainee in the IT industry and went on to join a firm of accountants to manage the setting up of a computerised system of payroll and accounts and the transfer from manual to IT systems.
After taking a gap year to travel around Australia I returned to the UK and continued my training in IT, taking up a position as Programmer Analyst and progressing to Programming Manager. Managing a small team supporting the development of accounting and payroll applications, along with user training and producing training documentation.
I have also held the position of IT Project Co-ordinator managing the implementation of a new data capture system for a local authority and have worked in a freelance capacity for a number of companies converting their manual accounting and payroll systems to Sage and, more recently, to xero.
Away from work I am married and mum to two grown up sons. I enjoy Pilates and attend a local gym, recently completing a zero to 5k running program. I like socialising with friends and family and love to walk around Groveland’s Park with our miniature schnauzer, Smithy.
I am a Xero certified advisor and a certified practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming.
